Word-by-Word Indonesian Translation Issue in Al-Baqarah 2:102

I would like to report a word-by-word translation inconsistency in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:102), specifically in the phrase:

وَيَتَعَلَّمُونَ مَا يَضُرُّهُمْ وَلَا يَنْفَعُهُمْ

The full English translation appears correct:

“And they learn that which harms them and does not benefit them.”

However, in the Indonesian word-by-word translation, the word “مَا” is translated as “tidak.”

This is grammatically inaccurate in this context.

In this verse, “مَا” functions as an ism mawsul (relative pronoun) meaning:

“apa yang” / “sesuatu yang”

It serves as the direct object (maf‘ul bihi) of the verb “يَتَعَلَّمُونَ” (they learn).

Therefore, the correct word-by-word Indonesian rendering should be:

•	ويتعلمون = dan mereka mempelajari

•	ما = apa yang / sesuatu yang

•	يضرهم = membahayakan mereka

•	ولا = dan tidak

•	ينفعهم = memberi manfaat kepada mereka

If “مَا” is translated as “tidak,” the grammatical structure becomes incorrect and may confuse readers, because in this sentence “مَا” is not functioning as a negation particle (ما النافية), but as a relative pronoun.

For consistency and grammatical accuracy, the Indonesian word-by-word translation of “مَا” in this verse should be revised to reflect its proper function.

Thank you for your attention and for your efforts in maintaining translation accuracy.
